Mumbai: The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has secured a landslide victory in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the country's richest civic body, ending the Thackeray family's 25-year-long stronghold on Mumbai. The Mahayuti has registered a victory in 25 out of 29 civic bodies.
The counting of votes kicked off at 10 am on Friday (January 16, 2026).
Voting for 29 municipal corporations, including the BMC, concluded on Thursday (January 15, 2026).
The crucial Maharashtra local body poll results seems to be going against the Thackeray cousins, Uddhav and Raj, in Mumbai, and the Pawars, uncle Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar, in Pune. For the Thackerays, the BMC polls were touted as a ‘fight for survival’, to revive the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the MNS, a mission in which it has clearly failed. For the Pawars, it is a test of their consolidated political base in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, where BJP seems to have made significant gains.
