In a major setback for YSRCP party, Andhra Pradesh assembly speaker Ch Ayyanna Patrudu on Wednesday rejected the request of former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to grant Leader of Opposition (LoP) status.

Speaker Ch Ayyanna Patrudu during the assembly session announced that “The Legislative Assembly is the temple, directly elected by the people, who are the Gods. As the Speaker, my role is akin to that of a priest in this temple of democracy. It is the will of the people, the Gods, that ultimately prevails. A priest cannot grant a wish that the Gods themselves have declined to fulfil. What has been declined by the people cannot be granted by the Speaker. Therefore, the unreasonable desire of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for recognition as the Leader of the Opposition cannot be considered”.

He added that Jagan Mohan Reddy’s utterances attributing motives to the Chair amount to breach of privilege and contempt of the House. Your absence from the House will only deprive your voters the opportunity to raise their concerns in the House through you. Hope the people of your constituencies find their voices resonating in the House now on.

Reacting the decision of the speaker former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy stated that in the assembly as far as the house is concerned there is no other party other than us in the opposition as parties which is BJP or Janasena are a part of the alliance. Be it any number but the fact remains is YSRCP has 40 percent of vote share. If you do not want to give the time and do not want the opposition to speak then they just making a mockery of the assembly.

YSRCP is the only Opposition Party in the Assembly and status should be given. If there is no rule on that specification, we had given Leader of Opposition to Chandrbabu when we were in office which shows the difference, Jagan added.
