A 5.5 magnitude earthquake jolted the Narsingdi region of Bangladesh on Friday morning at 10:08:26 (UTC+05:30), killing at least six people and leaving dozens injured, authorities said.
The quake's epicentre was located in Narsingdi, about 50 km from Dhaka, at a depth of 10 km, as per the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake sent strong tremors across several districts of West Bengal, including Cooch Behar, Dakshin Dinajpur, and Uttar Dinajpur, as well as in major Northeastern cities like Guwahati, Agartala, and Shillong. The quake was reported around 10:10 am in Kolkata for a few minutes.
Residents rushed out of their homes in Dhaka as buildings shook and some makeshift structures collapsed, Reuters witnesses said. "I have never felt such a tremor in my life. We were at the office when furniture started shaking. We rushed down the stairs onto the street and saw other people on the road already," said Sadman Sakib, who works in a private firm in Dhaka.
Muhammad Yunus, the head of the South Asian country's interim government, urged people to remain calm as authorities assess the damage.
"Everyone is urged to remain alert and not pay attention to any kind of rumours or misinformation," he said in a statement. “Further guidance will be provided through hotlines and official channels if necessary. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens.”
The moment was captured by numerous residents in Kolkata, and their videos were widely circulated across social media platforms.
