New Delhi: A fire broke out on Monday morning at the Ministry of Education office located within the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) campus in central Delhi's busy ITO area.
The incident triggered a massive emergency response, drawing multiple fire tenders, police personnel, and medical teams to the site. Fortunately, authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported, as the building was evacuated swiftly.
According to Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials, an emergency call regarding the blaze was received at approximately 9:37 AM.
The fire reportedly originated on the second floor of the building, specifically emanating from the faculty rooms within the administrative block.
An employee working as a Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) member at the campus first noticed thick smoke and flames billowing from the windows and immediately placed a PCR call.
The local police station at IP Estate received the initial alert around 8:45 AM and quickly dispatched teams to secure the perimeter and assist with crowd control.
8 vehicles (including five water tenders and a specialised water bowser), 1 breathing apparatus support van, 1 multipurpose vehicle, 3 ambulances, 2 PCR vans, and dedicated traffic police personnel.
Firefighters faced an intense battle to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further into the tightly packed academic and administrative complex.
Teams equipped with specialised breathing apparatus sets entered the smoke-filled second floor to combat the fire directly.
Following coordinated, sustained efforts by the first responders, the fire was successfully brought under control and completely extinguished later in the morning.
While the physical danger was averted, the incident has quickly drawn political attention.
The blaze has led to intense public scrutiny of ongoing controversies surrounding the ministry, and opposition leaders have publicly raised questions.
Senior political figures, including Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, termed the timing of the incident very fishy on social media platforms, demanding transparency regarding the safety of official records.
A senior police officer assured the public that the situation is now fully under control and no active fire remains in the building.
Authorities have initiated a joint inquiry by the police and the Delhi Fire Service to determine the exact cause of the fire, with forensic teams expected to examine whether an electrical short-circuit or an appliance malfunction triggered the incident.
