Kottayam: Kottayam police have arrested five third-year nursing students for allegedly ragging first-year students at the Government Nursing College, officials said. The arrests came after three junior students filed a complaint detailing months of brutal harassment at the institute.
The accused, identified as Samuel, Jeeva, Rahul, Rilnjith, and Vivek, have also been suspended from the college.
According to the complaint, ragging had been going on since November last year, with first-year students subjected to physical assault in the name of ragging.
As per the report, the victims were subjected to severe torture, including being poked and stabbed with compasses, scratched across their bodies, and having lotion poured into their wounds. The first-year students further alleged that their seniors inflicted extreme cruelty, including hanging heavy dumbbells from their private parts.
They were allegedly beaten and seniors used to hung dumbbells with their private parts meant for weightlifting and injured them using compasses and sharp objects, as per several media reports.
The complainants further stated that after inflicting injuries, the seniors applied lotion to the wounds, causing them further pain. Additionally, they were forced to have cream smeared on their faces, heads, and mouths as part of the ragging.
Apart from the physical abuse, the first-year students also alleged financial exploitation. They claimed that their seniors regularly took money from them on Sundays to buy alcohol. Those who failed to give money or refused to take orders from them were reportedly face more torture.
Gandhinagar police station in kottayam is investigating the case.
Kottayam district Congress President Natakam Suresh has alleged the college authorities have made a massive flaw and questioned how such cruel raig went unnoticed by authorities for three months.
“This is unacceptable. If quick action is not taken, There will be a political uprising against the authorities.” Meanwhile, CPI(M) state committe member from kottayam G Anilkumar blames the lack of students union action in the campus.”Government Will stand with the victims and deliver justice,” he said
