Ganderbal: A snow avalanche hit the Sarbal area of Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Wednesday, sending a massive wall of snow cascading down the mountains and causing panic among locals and tourists.
Dramatic visuals of the incident show a thick cloud of snow engulfing the area as the avalanche barreled toward the main road. A white truck and several tourists can be seen in the footage, appearing visibly alarmed by the sudden event.
According to sources, no casualties have been reported. However, rescue teams have been placed on high alert as a precautionary measure.
Authorities had already issued avalanche warnings for various districts in Kashmir, cautioning residents about the possibility of snow slides. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had also flagged a "medium-danger-level" avalanche risk for parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand above 2,500 meters.
This alert followed a deadly avalanche in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli region, where eight workers at a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) camp lost their lives.
