Ahead of the Belgian GP, Red Bull have sacked team principal Christian Horner, after he took charge in 2005. The F1 team confirmed the development, and Laurent Mekies has taken up the role of CEO of Red Bull Racing. Alan Permane has been appointed as the Team Principal of Racing Bulls.
As quoted by Sky Sports, Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff said, "We would like to thank Christian Horner for his exceptional work over the last 20 years.
"With his tireless commitment, experience, expertise and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula 1.
"Thank you for everything, Christian, and you will forever remain an important part of our team history."
Horner led Red Bull to 6 constructors and 8 drivers' championships in F1. Horner was embroiled in a controversy after he was accused of inappropriate conduct by a female Red Bull employee. The F1 team launched an internal investigation and later cleared Horner of any wrongdoing.
Red Bull have failed to replicate their dominance, and Max Verstappen is currently in third place, behind McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Their downfall started in the latter half of the last season, as reigning Formula 1 champion Verstappen won just two wins in the last 14 races. Speculations of Verstappen leaving Red Bull has grown over the last few weeks and Mercedes have emerged as a potential destination. Toto Wolff seems to be an avid admirer of the four-time F1 champion and he could fill the void of Lewis Hamilton, who went on to join Ferrari.
Verstappen finished 5th in the British GP and has won only two races this season.
