Why 5th Gen SU-57 Could Be India’s Big Bang in the Skies

If India proceeds with the potential acquisition of Russia’s Su-57 fighter jet during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi, it could mark a pivotal step in strengthening India’s aerial capabilities amid regional tensions. Alongside possible systems like the S-500 missile defense, such a deal would deepen defense ties and help address the Indian Air Force’s shortfall of 30 squadrons versus its authorized 42, with aging MiG-21 jets nearing retirement. With adversaries such as China projected to field over 1,000 modern fighters by 2030, India’s pursuit of fifth-generation technology through the Su-57 would align with its strategic imperative of maintaining air dominance. If finalized, the Su-57 would bring stealth, sensor fusion, supercruise, and multirole versatility, with payload flexibility up to 14 weapons. Its lower operating cost and high sortie rates could bolster sustained campaigns. Such a deal would replenish squadrons, accelerate technology transfer, and potentially advance India toward a self-reliant fifth-generation force.
