Why India's Top Battle Tank Missed Its Deadline

The Arjun Mk-1A represents a significant evolution of India's indigenous Main Battle Tank program, designed to rectify the operational shortcomings of its predecessor, the Mk-1. Developed by DRDO, this upgraded variant incorporates 72 enhancements, including 14 major improvements in firepower, mobility, and protection. Its capabilities feature a 120mm rifled gun compatible with advanced ammunition like thermobaric rounds, improved Kanchan composite armor reinforced with Explosive Reactive Armor, and a remote-controlled weapon station. Furthermore, advanced optics and a new panoramic commander sight provide superior hunter-killer situational awareness during combat.

Despite these technical advances, the program confronts severe production and logistical challenges. Supply chain disruptions have hampered progress, specifically a four-year delay in procuring German MTU engines. This bottleneck has compelled a strategic pivot toward developing indigenous 1500 HP engines, consequently pushing the delivery timeline for the 118 ordered tanks to late 2025 or beyond and highlighting the ongoing tension between indigenization goals and immediate operational readiness.
